Playing around with a design for a desk I want to build lead to “maybe it should have built-in speakers?”, which then led to “let’s build some speakers!”.
So why?
Right now the only decent sounding audio reproduction device in our house are my trusty AKG headphones. In any other case I am resorting to built-in TV speakers and something that I picked up for USD 15 in 2011 that plugs into my PC.
We used to have one of these “Home Theater in a Box” things when we were living in our condo, and it still sits in a box in a closet (hence the name…), but the speakers are kinda big and ugly and while it is definitely an improvement over built-in TV speakers, I am not willing to revive it (another thing that needs to go onto craigslist…).
While the initial plan was to build something for my desk, I am now aiming for “let’s try how this sounds in our living room”, so the speakers might end up not sitting on my desk at all.
Since we don’t want huge speakers bolted to the walls of our smallish living area, I settled on a design by renowned DIY speaker guru Jeff Bagby called The Quarks. Since they are tiny (one fits in the palm of your hands) I decided to pair them with the tiny Voxel Subwoofer by equally renowned DIY speaker guru Paul Carmody.
The Quarks are available as a kit, but the Voxel is all DIY.
